ANZAC Day

ANZAC 12 ANZAC 12 ANZAC 12

Today Australia celebrated ANZAC day our most important national occasion. ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps and in 1914, when war broke out, the two countries joined forces to capture the Gallipoli peninsula and make their way to Constantinople which is now called Istanbul in Turkey. There were heavy losses on both sides as the ANZAC forces landed on the beaches on April 25th. The battle lasted for nearly 8 months  before a stalemate was declared and the ANZAC troops evacuated. Over 8000 Australian soldiers died during this time and this great loss had a profound impact on the Australian people leading to ANZAC day becoming considered by many as our nations most important national holiday.

CSIRO

When we walked into the hall where the CSIRO things were, we could tell there was going to be a lot of fire, loud noises, explosions and energy. The first thing he did with us was put some cats on catapults. Someone had to drop it on to this catapult and another person had to catch it. After that there was this thing where he told us that sherbit has energy so put sherbit into a balloon and put the balloon with the sherbit upside down onto a plastic bottle that had fizzy drink in it and poured the sherbit into the fizzy drink and then the balloon got bigger and bigger and then he got this propeller and separated the bottle and the balloon apart and then stuck the balloon and bottle together and then some time later we had a few more things and then it finished and we had a great time.

 Flat Stanleys

Eairler this year our students were sharing the book Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown. It tells the story of a young boy who becomes flat when a bulletin board falls on him. Beacause he is flat he can go on many adventures.

The students then made their own Flat Stanley and wrote stories about the adventures they had with him. Many students took photographs or drew pictures to accompany their stories.

These stories and pictures were then posted to other students around the world in Scotland, several schools in America and in Japan.

This week our Flat Stanleys came back from Japan with photos and  stories written by Japanese students about his adventures over there. It has been a wonderful learning experience for all the students involved. New friendships have now been formed with some students continuing to correspond with their overseas buddy.
